Chapter Seventeen

Riding in a car with Remy Jackson, to an unknown destination somewhere outside of New Orleans, wasn’t the smartest decision I could have made, but it was my decision, and I had to stick to my convictions. It was the only way to bury the nerves causing me to tap my fingers against the steering wheel.

We hadn’t hooked onto an interstate full of cars and civilization. Instead we had taken back road after back road, where the only humans we came across were few and far between. As the trees started to arch above us, reducing the amount of available sunlight and casting a natural shadow over the land, I started to wonder where Remy was really taking me.

“Where are we?” I asked.

Remy glanced at me. “Does this place unsettle you?” he asked.

I said nothing.

“It’s alright if it does. It’s designed to.”

“Designed?”

He smiled like he knew a secret I wasn’t privy to, then turned his eyes back to the road again. “Make a left,” he said.

I saw the tight opening only a few seconds before we passed it. Luckily, I had been driving slowly enough that I didn’t need to stop too harshly. No way was I taking any risks on this uneven, gravelly road.

Mossy fingers caressed the Prius’ hood and windshield as I drove the car down the narrow path. Occasionally, those fingers would scratch the car creating an awful screeching sound that would rattle my teeth. This wasn’t my car, and I was taking it into places it probably shouldn’t be going into.

Despite the anxiety that being here seemed to be causing, I also couldn’t help but marvel at the energy of the place. Ever since we took that narrow path, the very air had started to feel possessed of its own electric charge, and my body was acting as an antenna for it. After only a couple of minutes crawling down this path, I knew we were coming up on a Hollow… but something was wrong here.

Very, very wrong.

“Calm yourself,” Remy said.

I looked over at him. “I’m calm,” I said.

“You aren’t, and your nerves could get us both killed.”

“What are you talking about?”

“Stop the car.”

I pressed on the brake. The car stopped. The windows were closed, but I could almost hear the buzzing of insects just waiting for me to open the door and give them something to bite. In the silence that followed, I became only too aware of the charge in the air, the strength of it. My body was singing, calling to the power emanating from the Hollow, but I was starting to feel a little light-headed.

Remy reached out to me and grabbed my wrist with his thumb and forefinger. I was going to jerk away, but couldn’t seem to be able to move at all. I could only look at him, and at my wrist. “What are you doing?” I asked.

“Quiet,” he said, his face grave, eyes darting around as if he were scanning for movement outside the car.

I stared out of the windshield.
